Do you ever notice that most people who have pets fall into one category or another? They are either dog lovers or cat lovers. If you are a cat lover do you ever wonder why?

How can anyone not love cats? Let's face it, they don't make you get up at all hours to walk them, they don't bark at the slightest sound incessantly, and if you want to leave for a weekend, all you do is leave clean liter, fresh water and dry food, and off you go!

Seriously, why do certain people lean towards one or the other? Speaking for myself as a devoted animal lover, I love all animals. I not only love animals, but I have taken this to another level! I go out of my way to save the life of lizards should they haphazardly come in the vicinity of my cat! Nonetheless I do have to admit that it is my lifestyle and/or laziness that also contributes to which animal I prefer, which I am sure by now you have guessed is cats!

People who say, 'they just don't like cats' either have had a bad experience or no experience whatsoever. Considering the diversity in personality traits, intelligence and training habits, saying 'I just don't like cats' is almost as bad as saying 'I don't like people'. This is not to say some people have, of course, legitimate reasons for saying such a generalized statement, but let us stick to those people who just say it with no experience whatsoever.

Cats are among the most beautiful, talented and friendliest creatures walking this planet. Many people in all corners of the world are cat lovers. In fact, there have been a few famous cat lovers in our history. Winston Churchill's cat, Jock, slept in bed with him, ate meals at the table with him and even went to his meetings with him. Albert Einstein had a cat named Tiger who would get depressed when it rained. Author Ernest Hemingway had more than 30 cats at his Florida home. And Florence Nightingale owned over 60 cats throughout her lifetime.

Cats have been around for a long time. The ancient Egyptians were the first to keep cats in their home to keep pests away from their food. In fact, cats in Egypt were said to be gods or goddesses and were worshiped as such. Anyone who killed cats during that time and were caught were given the death penalty. Today, cats are quickly becoming the most popular household pet.

There are over 100 million cats on this planet today and over 100 breeds of the domestic cat. Breeds of cats vary by body type, eye color, fur color and fur length. For example Bengal cats look a lot like tigers, Burmese cats have golden eyes with silky fur and Maine Coon cats have a rectangular body with large oval eyes.
